Meaning: The clearance to independently execute a specific instrument approach procedure.

TAXI CLEARANCE

Meaning: The controller's instruction specifying the route and taxiways the aircraft must use to taxi to the runway or gate.

Meaning: The assignment of a standardized instrument departure route which must be followed precisely after takeoff.

HOLDING PATTERN

Meaning: A predetermined maneuver designed to keep an aircraft within a specified airspace while awaiting further clearance.

MISSED APPROACH

Meaning: The prescribed procedure to be followed if an instrument approach cannot be completed to a landing.

CROSS RUNWAY

Meaning: A mandatory and specific authorization needed to taxi across any active or inactive runway.

LANDING CLEARANCE
LANDEFREIGABE
Meaning: The final authorization given by the control tower to land the aircraft on the designated runway.

WEATHER DEVIATION
WETTERAUSWEICHKURS
Meaning: Authorization given by air traffic control allowing the aircraft to steer away from the assigned route to avoid severe weather like thunderstorms.
ATC: DLH123, deviation 10 degrees left approved, report when able to rejoin flight plan route.
Pilot: Deviation 10 degrees left approved, will report when able to rejoin, DLH123.
SPEED CONTROL
GESCHWINDIGKEITSREGELUNG
Meaning: Instructions given by the controller to adjust aircraft speed in knots to maintain correct separation between flights.
ATC: DLH123, reduce speed to 180 knots for separation.

INTERCEPT GLIDESLOPE
ANFLUGKURS-ETBLIERUNG
Meaning: The process of capturing and tracking the electronic vertical guidance path (glideslope) of the Instrument Landing System down to the runway.
ATC: DLH123, report established on the localizer, descend on glideslope runway 25 right.
Pilot: Established on localizer, descending on glideslope runway 25 right, DLH123.
LEAVE THE HOLDING

Meaning: Air traffic control clearance to exit a predefined holding pattern at a specific waypoint and continue with the arrival procedure.

Meaning: Specific headings provided by air traffic control to guide a distressed aircraft to the nearest suitable runway on the fastest possible route, clearing all other traffic.
ATC: DLH123, radar vectors for immediate ILS approach runway 25 right, turn left heading 340, all other traffic cleared out of the sector.

CONDITIONAL CLEARANCE

Meaning: A clearance conditional upon another aircraft or traffic. The word 'behind' MUST strictly be read back at both the beginning and the very end of your transmission!

ALTIMETER SETTING

Meaning: The instruction to switch the altimeter reference from the local pressure (QNH) to the standard pressure setting (1013 hPa) when climbing through the transition altitude.
